Everything is packed (that’s only half my bags) and in 12 hours Ill be headed toward España!
It has taken a lot of hard work and planning over the last two years to get to this point. This all started as a small idea I had after reading a passage in Michener’s book Iberia, where he compared fiesta in the late 60s to Hemingway’s fiesta of the 20s.
The concept stayed with me for a while and one night after shooting at Cinequest (San Jose’s premiere film festival) I stayed up way past my bed time talking to a photographer I had just met about my idea. He had been to fiesta before and began to get just as excited about this idea as I was.
Here we are 2.5 years later and we are actually making it happen. That photographer turned out to be Stan Olszewski and he is joining me in Spain in 3 weeks. We grew from just the two of us last year for our scouting trip to well over 20 people involved now. We have student interns for the University de Navarra, some of my former students, some of the most well known runners in Spain, an incredible production coordinator (if you ever need anything in Pamplona you find Stephanie) and even a Pulitzer winning photojournalist (my former professor at SJSU). What a great team!
I feel honored to be working with all these great people. Its very humbling to have them all grab onto my idea and watch as they get excited and help to flesh it out and grow it. !FIESTA¡ now has a life of its own and my job is just to guide it and make sure it all gets done.
See you in Pamplona!
